Quick start

  1. Type an improper fraction (23/4) or a mixed number (5 3/4, with a space).
  2. Read the converted form and the steps.

Improper fraction to mixed number

Divide the top by the bottom. The whole-number answer becomes the whole part, and the remainder goes over the original denominator. 23 ÷ 4 = 5 remainder 3, so 23/4 = 5 3/4.

Mixed number to improper fraction

Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and keep the denominator. For 5 3/4: 5 × 4 + 3 = 23, so the answer is 23/4.

When to use each form

Mixed numbers are easier to picture: 5 3/4 cups of flour is clearly a bit less than 6. Improper fractions are easier to calculate with, especially for multiplying and dividing, so convert before you work and convert back at the end.
