Quick start
- Type the pay amount, for example 52000.
- Choose how often that amount is paid: yearly, monthly, every 2 weeks, hourly and so on.
- Check the hours and days per week, then read the table.
The formulas
Everything is converted to a yearly figure first, using 52 working weeks:
- Hourly rate = yearly pay ÷ (52 × hours per week)
- Yearly pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52
- Monthly pay = yearly pay ÷ 12
Example: 52,000 a year at 40 hours a week
| Period | Pay |
|---|---|
| Hourly | 25.00 |
| Daily (8 hours) | 200.00 |
| Weekly | 1,000.00 |
| Every 2 weeks | 2,000.00 |
| Twice a month | 2,166.67 |
| Monthly | 4,333.33 |
A quick rule of thumb for a 40-hour week: halve the yearly salary and drop the thousands. 52,000 a year is about 26 an hour; the exact figure is 25.
Every two weeks or twice a month?
They sound alike but are not the same. Paid every two weeks means 26 paydays a year. Paid twice a month, such as on the 15th and the last day, means 24. The same salary gives a slightly larger cheque when it is split 24 ways.
What this does not include
The results are gross pay, before income tax, social security, pension or other deductions. Paid holidays are counted as worked weeks, so the hourly figure is what you earn per scheduled hour.
Common questions
How much is 50,000 a year per hour?
At 40 hours a week it is 50,000 ÷ 2,080 ≈ 24.04 an hour.
How much is 20 an hour per year?
At 40 hours a week: 20 × 40 × 52 = 41,600 a year, or about 3,466.67 a month.
Why 52 weeks and not 50?
A salary is paid for all 52 weeks, including paid holidays. If you take unpaid weeks off, lower the yearly figure to match.
Is this before or after tax?
Before tax. Your take-home pay will be lower after tax and other deductions.
