"Average" can mean three different things, and they do not always agree. Knowing which one to use can change the story your numbers tell. Here are the daily step counts for one week: 3,200, 5,400, 5,400, 6,100, 7,800, 8,300 and 21,000.

Mean: share it out equally

Add everything and divide by how many values there are. The total is 57,200 steps over 7 days, so the mean is about 8,171 steps a day.

Median: the middle value

Put the values in order and pick the one in the middle. With 7 values, it is the 4th: 6,100 steps. If there were an even number of values, you would average the middle two.

Mode: the most common value

The value that appears most often is 5,400, which shows up twice. That is the mode.

Why the three answers differ

One long hike of 21,000 steps pulled the mean up to 8,171, even though six of the seven days were below that. The median, 6,100, ignores how big the extreme day was, so it describes a typical day better. This is the same reason news reports on house prices and pay use the median: a few very large values would distort the mean.

An average is only half the picture

Two classes can both average 70% while one has every student between 65 and 75 and the other ranges from 30 to 100. Spread measures fill that gap. The range is the largest value minus the smallest, and the standard deviation describes how far values usually sit from the mean.

Tip When the mean and median are far apart, your data is lopsided. That is a sign to report the median, or both.

Common questions

What if two values tie for the most common?

The data has two modes and is called bimodal.

Can the mean be a value that never appears in the data?

Yes. The mean of 1, 2 and 4 is 2.33, which is not one of the values.

Which average does a spreadsheet's AVERAGE function give?

The mean. Use MEDIAN and MODE for the others.
