Shifts past midnight
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the period runs into the next day. From 22:00 to 06:00 is 2 hours before midnight plus 6 hours after, 8 hours in total.
Converting minutes to decimal hours
Payroll and timesheets usually need decimal hours. Divide the minutes by 60: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 is 0.5, 45 is 0.75, and 20 is about 0.33. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45. At 18 an hour that is 139.50, not 134.10.
Adding up a week
Work out each day's decimal hours here, then add them together. Decimal hours add like normal numbers, which avoids mistakes with carrying minutes over 60.
Common questions
How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract any unpaid break. 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 hours.
What is 7 hours 30 minutes in decimal?
7.5 hours, because 30 minutes is half an hour.
Can I use am and pm?
Yes. Use the time picker, or type times like 9:30 am and 5:15 pm.
Does it work for night shifts?
Yes. If the end is earlier than the start, the time is counted past midnight.
